Scared of the Self-Injection

It will be my first and I'm a big baby. I commend all the IVFers out there who likely have had/have to do injections themselves...

Ugh. I'm in Chicago for work (yay, I love this city!) and decided to stay through Saturday to see a close friend and was hoping she could do it for me Friday night. Turns out, she needed to leave town on an emergency family visit... so I'm left all alone to figure this out.

How am I going to do this? I look away everytime someone inserts a needle in me. And now I have to do this myself????

Ok, great cause, greater cause. I know.

Can I just aim and still look away? Somehow?

Seriously, any advice? :)

  1. I had to give myself my very first PIO injection in my thigh and was terrified. (It's a scary 2-inch needle!) Every time I'd go to do it, I'd pull back at the last second and ended up with a bunch of little bloody dots all over my leg where it would just nik the skin. Even though I thought I was relaxed when I finally did it, I must not have been because it ended up brusing. (The actual shot didn't hurt all that bad though!)

The rest of the PIOs were given by my husband in my bum. They hurt every once in a while... mostly when I'd tense up.

The shots in my stomach never bothered me... it's a tiny needle.

My suggestion is to get an orange or grapefruit and practice just doing it. Stick it in, pull it out - over and over until you can stick it in in one fluid motion with no hesitation... then switch to your leg, RELAX and just do it.

The first time is the worst because you don't know what to expect, but I promise it gets easier!

  2. you can do it... yes put the needle in place and look away.... you will be fine... I promise... :)

  3. forgot to tell you... Chicago is on my list of places to visit.. I havent been there since I was a teenager.. I wanna go back... if I were there.... I would sooooo give you the shot... better you than me:)

  4. I am absolutely NO help on this one! I just wanted to comment that you're among the list of my IVF heroes for doing the self-injection. I WILL NOT -EVER- be giving myself ANY injections over the course of my IVF journey (of course, now I will probably HAVE to! lol) I hope you survived it...

  5. Chicago! I've never been there and have always wanted to.

I'm sorry about the injections. I'm in the same boat as you are...I never do them myself. You can do it. You already gave the best reason...that it's for a greater cause.

My only advice...don't agonize over it with the shot in your hand. Do it right away. Do you use ice? I barely even feel mine when it's numb.

  6. you can do it! the ones in your stomach are really not that bad.
    deep breathe. hang in there

  7. good luck! I have faith you can do it. Quick and without thought, like a bandaid. If it helps, ice the area first. Promise yourself some kind of treat afterwards!

  8. Hello from ICLW.

I'm scared of shots as well. Mine start in a few weeks. I hope in the end it will be worth it! Good luck.

  9. You can do it! I personally think the fear of the pain is much worse than any pain itself. Most of the time, it doesn't hurt. Occasionally it stings, and one of my meds (don't remember which one) stung as it went in. I've just been getting my first PIO injections in my bum (my BIG fear) and now I've had three and they don't even hurt. You can do it! I know you can!

  10. I don't have any advice for you as I have never done injectibles, but I would be the exact same way. I never look when I'm being poked with needles, either. I wish you the best. Fingers crossed that it will all be worth it for you!

    Happy ICLW! ~#48~

  11. The best advice I can give you is to "just do it". I give myself daily Lovenox injections, and there are days where I totally psych myself out. I spend too long finding the right spot, I panic about it hurting, and those are the days where it hurts the worst. The days where I just get the syringe, pinch some skin and do it are the easiest.

So don't psych yourself up too much! You can do this! :)

  12. Oh honey, sorry you're stuck in this position. I do alright with shots, but only if someone else is giving them to me, I too am not good when it comes to self administering. Hope it went okay & you were able to tough it out:)
